Senators to grace Kalibo Ati-Atihan fest

KALIBO, Aklan - Two senators are gracing the renowned Kalibo Sadsad Ati-Atihan event, the biggest and much-awaited street dancing contest of Ati-Atihan tribes and groups on January 14, Saturday.

Senators Bong Revilla and Imee Marcos are expected to join the festivities as well as locals and foreigners in honor of Senor Sto. Nino. 

Kalibo Sadsad Ati-Atihan is the local version of Mardigra where colorful costumes are showcased by 34 registered Ati-Atihan tribes and groups. 

Also attending the festival is Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office general manager Mel Robles.

The street dancing of tribes is one of the most celebrated and draws thousands of spectators. 

Saturday’s Sadsad Ati-Atihan kicks off at 7.30am at Osmena Avenue Capitol and makes its way through downtown Kalibo to Mabini Street and Roxas Avenue.

In the afternoon, the contest route also starts at 1.30pm along M. Laserna Street, winds down Rizal Street and then onto the Kalibo Pastrana Park, 

The Ati-Atihan event of competing contingents should wrap around 4pm Saturday. 

The Ati-Atihan contest had been taking to the streets of Kalibo  for the past 60 years. At that time, the grand champion prize was P150. 

This year, the Tribal Big champion will take home a  whooping P1 million. Of this figure, Kalibo mayor Juris Bautista Sucro committed P650,000 and the local government of Kalibo budgeted P350,000 through the Kalibo Ati-Atihan Festival Board. 

Other categories are Tribal Small, Modern Tribal and Balik Ati.

Kalibo Ati-Atihan 'Sadsad' salvo back in full force

On October 7, some 80 Ati-Atihan tribes, Balik Ati and modern groups are coming back in full force where they will converge along Mabini Street to Desposorio Maagma Sr. Street.
